Going natural in the home - homemade cleaning products

homemade cleaning products

I have been using products in my family home such as Natures Direct and Murchison & Hume for a while now – well ever since the baby was born and I realised how toxic mainstream products are.

So, I have been wondering lately about creating my own cleaning products and have been keeping an eye for some recipes.  There is a lot out there – here is a selection of what I have found.

Playing favourites…. Cleaning products – an update

So I have an update from my last post on natural cleaning products for the home.  A very trusted source has recommended these made in Melbourne natural cleaning products.  She went as far as to call them "divine" - she uses the dish wash, toilet clean, floor clean, all purpose surface spray, hand wash and laundry liquid - and loves them.

Would love any feedback if you have it...

Playing favourites…. Cleaning products – a work in progress

One of the main concerns I had about my home during my pregnancy and after the birth of my daughter was the harsh chemicals that litter my home for the noble cause of ‘cleanliness.’  I wondered whether the chemicals that are supposed to keep us clean and sanitised were actually working against us. Given that some cleaners smell makes my head spin surely it can’t be good for little baby’s developing body.

Along with a lot of other ‘must look into’s’ the cleaning product quandary stayed buried for a while, until a few months ago.  Through a friend I was introduced to Nature Direct. And then the other week I came across Murchison-Hume in Pomegranate in South Melbourne.

According to their website – “Nature Direct products are derived from 100% natural ingredients including corn, tree sap, processed coconut extract, sugar cane and de-ionized water.”  I.e.  They are non-toxic.  The same is to be said of Murchison-Hume – they are non-toxic and biodegradable.  And the product I bought are made from natural materials.  So, I feel safe using it in high baby traffic areas.

I have seen other products e.g. tri nature, orange power, earth choice, but am yet to try them.

So my experience with the products so far:

Nature Direct EnviroMist:  odour control disinfectant “made from a blend of water soluble organic plant extracts (e-oils): clove, cypress, eucalyptus, mint, pine, rosemary, savoury and thyme.” I use this in the baby’s room after nappy change and when I am clearing the nappy bin. And I also spray it straight into the fridge if I have had fish or something stinky in there!! It’s magic.

Nature Direct Heavy duty cleaner:  This was probably the product I was most sceptical about – I honestly didn’t think that it would come close to its toxic cousins.  But thankfully I was wrong and my kitchen is being cleaned only with this now.  It is not the products only use, but it’s where I have the most concerns.  It cleaned the grime (embarrassingly from the uncleaned range hood) in the blink of an eye.  I was surprised how quickly the built up oily reside came off.  And the smell is intoxicating for all of the right reasons.  All the products have such a fresh smell.

Nature Direct EnviroAir: The non-toxic way to freshen the air in your home.  Again, I have it in the kitchen (open plan layout) as this is where we spend most of our time.

Murchison-Hume Heirloom Dishwashing Liquid:  This is my latest purchase and I am really excited by the range.  A family business, driven to create something special for the good of their family.  The label says “non-toxic, non-flammable, non-fuming, rapidly 100% biodegradable…”  The product is made from sugar cane, coconut oil and water, plus essential oils.  The packaging is divine. The smell is divine.  And, yes, of course it does the job it’s meant to - well.

So, this is just the start of my journey into the land of organic, baby friendly home cleaners.  I will keep updating this as the journey continues and as I test more products.
